Budgeting after a pay rise or change. If your salary is changing, work out the difference in your monthly take-home. It's also useful for understanding the impact of being moved onto a different tax code or crossing a student loan threshold.

Comparing salary sacrifice pensions. Enter your pension contribution to see how much it reduces your take-home pay. Salary sacrifice arrangements save on NI too. the calculator factors this in so you can see the real cost of your pension.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tax year does this use?

The calculator uses 2025/26 tax year rates for England and Wales: personal allowance of £12,570, basic rate at 20% up to £50,270, higher rate at 40% up to £125,140, and additional rate at 45% above that. National Insurance thresholds and rates are also current.

Does it include Scottish tax rates?

Not currently. this calculator uses the rest-of-UK tax bands. Scottish income tax has different bands and rates. If you live in Scotland, your take-home pay will differ from what's shown here.

Which student loan plan should I select?

Plan 1: loans from before 2012. Plan 2: loans from 2012–2022 (England & Wales). Plan 4: Scottish loans from 1998 onwards. Plan 5: loans from August 2023 onwards. If you're not sure, check your student loan statement or the gov.uk website.

How does salary sacrifice work?

With salary sacrifice, your pension contribution comes off your gross salary before tax and NI. This means you pay less NI and the pension contribution costs you less in take-home pay than if you paid into a personal pension and claimed tax relief. The calculator shows the net impact on your pay.

What about benefits in kind?

This calculator covers salary, pension, and student loans. It doesn't include benefits in kind (company car, health insurance, etc.) or other deductions like childcare vouchers or cycle-to-work schemes. For a full picture, check your payslip or speak to your payroll department.

Is my data private?
