Use Cases

Working out VAT. Need to know how much VAT is on a price, or what a price is without VAT? The VAT tab handles both: add 20% VAT to a net price, or strip it back out of a gross price. Essential for freelancers and small businesses.

Calculating pay rises and discounts. If your salary goes up by 3.5%, what does that mean in actual pounds? If something is 30% off, what's the real saving? These are calculations most people do wrong in their heads. let the calculator get it right.

Reverse percentages. If a sale price is £56 after a 20% discount, what was the original price? (It's not £70. it's £70. And no, it's not that obvious when you're tired.) The reverse percentage tab works backwards from the result to find the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the current UK VAT rate?

The standard rate is 20%. There's a reduced rate of 5% for some items (like children's car seats and energy-saving materials) and a zero rate for essentials like most food, books, and children's clothing. The calculator defaults to 20% but you can change it.

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Divide the increase by the original value and multiply by 100. For example, if something goes from £80 to £100, the increase is £20. £20 ÷ £80 × 100 = 25%. The calculator does this automatically. just enter the two numbers.

What's the difference between percentage and percentage points?

If an interest rate goes from 3% to 5%, that's a 2 percentage point increase, but it's a 67% increase in the rate itself. This matters when comparing financial products. always check whether a change is quoted in percentage points or as a percentage of the original rate.

Can I use this for markup vs margin?

Yes. A 50% markup on £100 gives you £150 (selling price). A 50% margin on £150 means the cost was £75. They sound similar but produce very different numbers. The percentage increase/decrease tabs can handle both. just be clear which you need.

Is my data private?

Yes. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
